MERCHANTS SQUARE. Incredible handmade items by Virginia artists have made this a traveler and local favorite among the shops in Merchants Square. The stained glass fireplace screens are one of a kind, and there are many other equally interesting items. You will find a wide price range, arts and crafts in different mediums and helpful but not overbearing staff to assist you.

MERCHANTS SQUARE. The original shop for Nancy Thomas's folk artwork is on Ballard Street in Yorktown, but in 1997 she decided to open a shop in Merchants Square. A nationally renowned artist, she has a whimsical style that is depicted in sculpture, paintings and ceramics. Her prices are reasonable, and her works will make you smile.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG. Perfect name for this place! The Flowered Cupboard has beautiful painted lamps, ceramics that make you smile and a pair of carved swans in the window that need to go home with someone! Unique items make this a delightful place to shop, and as you might expect, a lot of the merchandise has flowers on it. This is a local favorite that is off the beaten tourist path, adding to its ambience.

You can get great prices on Lenox, Gorham and Kirk-Stieff here. Better than many of the Lenox outlet shops across the country, this store features some of the historical selection and even some White House pieces. Good merchandise and good values at the Patriot Plaza Premium Outlets make this a worthwhile stop.

What has 5 million visitors a year, 8,000 parking places, covers 200 acres and has 32 buildings? The world-famous Williamsburg Pottery Factory. It is as much an attraction as a shopping area. This place has been in existence since 1938 and has grown way beyond the pottery that is created here ­ although those are among the best items. With the feel of an international bazaar, this spot boasts bargains galore. Be prepared to walk and be overwhelmed.
