A local favorite, this place does not have the ambience of its name ­ it is not a barn but an elegant place with nice linens, candlelight, attentive waiters and a wide selection of prime Midwestern beef and local seafood dishes. Known for its meat, the menu offers a wide selection of cuts and sizes. Open only for dinner, this popular place stays busy, so make a reservation. Casual attire is appropriate.

WILLIAMSBURG. Locally owned by a graduate of the Culinary Institute, this establishment became popular because of the beef, but there is much more to choose from. Regional seafood, chops and chicken dishes appear on the menu ­ even fans of tapas can be satisfied thanks to ditties like clam fritters and spanakopita. The decor is elegant yet cozy, with just a touch of Southwestern influence thrown in. Locals love it here, so make a reservation.

Since 1975, the Fireside has been serving excellent beef to locals in a setting that is a throwback to the real steakhouses of the past. The restaurant, decorated in dark colors, has well-dressed waiters who open heavy, bound menus for customers who are seated at linen-covered tables. This place does not appear to have changed much at all. However, the menu has changed so that now, along with the superb beef, you'll find Greek options and more seafood opportunities. But go for the beef. Despite the heavy ambience, diners are casual and families are welcome.

Cooked or uncooked? That is the question here, and you can pick your answer. Chefs make the food sizzle at your tableside grill, or you can belly up to the sushi bar for some Hurricane rolls and other uncooked delicacies.
